Local councils considering name change for suburb to avoid NSW ‘double up’

Local councils considering name change for suburb to avoid NSW ‘double up’

Kiama and Shellharbour Council are considering changing the name of the local suburb 'Yellow Rock.'

It comes after the NSW Geographical Names Board notified the councils there is also a suburb named Yellow Rock in the Blue Mountains LGA.

The board says the double up can cause issues with emergency services responses, service deliveries, navigation and identity management and has requested Council investigate solutions to resolve the duplication.

Council has written to affected residents and will begin a period of community consultation.

Proposed options include:

- Adding a prefix of suffix to the existing name. E.g Yellow Rock Creek or Mount Yellow Rock

- Changing the suburb to a completely new unique name

- Dissolving the suburb into an adjoining suburb

- Changing the duplicated road name in the duplicated suburb

Kiama and Shellharbour Council say their preference is to add a prefix or suffix to retain the historical significance of the area, and impact residents the least.
