The New South Wales Government has officially declared the Illawarra a Renewable Energy Zone.
The region is the fifth and last to be declared to play a role in the state's clean energy production.
Treasurer Matt Kean says the Illawarra is an ideal region, due to its existing energy, port and transport infrastructure, as well as the regions highly skilled workforce.
The move is set to unlock $43 billion worth of potential renewable energy investment for the region and more than 8000 jobs.
